The values and principles of the UK
The UK’s stated public values support a society in which disagreement is handled through law and democratic institutions rather than intimidation. They apply to daily behaviour as well as national politics.
Fundamental principles
- Democracy: people can choose representatives and participate peacefully in public decisions.
- The rule of law: public bodies and individuals are accountable under the law.
- Individual liberty: people can make their own lawful choices.
- Tolerance and mutual respect: people may follow different religions, hold different beliefs or have no religion.
- Participation in community life: residents can contribute locally and nationally.
Rights and responsibilities
Rights protect freedoms such as belief, expression, fair treatment and a fair trial. Responsibilities describe the conduct that helps those freedoms work for everybody: obeying the law, treating others fairly, respecting different opinions, caring for family and helping protect the local environment.
Tolerance does not require agreement with every opinion. It requires respect for another person’s lawful right to hold a different view. Extremism, threats and violence are not protected ways of resolving disagreement.
