Chapter 3 focused study guide

British Empire, Industrial Revolution and Inventions

Study Britain as a global and industrial power, including empire, trade, steam power, engineering, reform and British inventions.

Section 3.3

A global power

Industrial strength and overseas trade helped Britain build a global empire. The empire included territories in many parts of the world, but its growth also involved conquest, coercion, slavery and unequal power.

Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade brought enormous suffering. Parliament prohibited the slave trade in the British Empire in 1807 and abolished slavery in most of the empire in the 1830s. Abolition resulted from campaigning by enslaved and formerly enslaved people as well as British activists and parliamentarians.

From empire to Commonwealth

During the 20th century, most colonies became independent. Many independent states chose to join the Commonwealth, a voluntary association whose members cooperate as equal countries.
